Modern Minimalism: One Artist's Journey

“We go on multiplying our conveniences only to multiply our cares. We increase our possessions only to the enlargement of our anxieties.”

- Anna C. Brackett, 1836.

In a metropolis filled with wants and desires right at our fingertips, it is easy to find yourself submersed in the abyss of isolation and confusion. In regards to art and art practice, I have found myself stepping back from the traditional realms of painting and decided to enroute a different journey. I have found my own form of satisfaction through paint as a medium, one that enhances the ideology that less is more. But then I asked myself, is less really more? Satisfaction is not when you have the desire to add to an art piece, but in fact, when you have no desire to take away from an art piece.

My initial interests from the beginning of the semester remain prominent identities throughout my process. I am attracted to disconfigured shapes and forms through painting, photography and installation. Artists such as Ceal Floyer, Sarah Lucas, Filip Custic, Donna Huanca and Carlota Guerrero create work that combine both reality and fantasy through their raw autsere of art making.

As an individual interested in sculpture, materials and fashion photography, I found that I could use these interests in an innovative way within my studio practice. I am attracted to creating a space in which the viewer can become submerged into and their spatial awareness is pronounced. Where a single colour palette can create an atmosphere that makes the viewer feel comfortable within the space. They can walk around and take in the calm nature that is within the installation, away from the hustle and bustle of our outside world.
